The 7.62x54r was designed in 1891 in what was then the Russian Empire for use as a service cartridge in the bolt-action Mosin Nagant. The Winchester 1895 was also chambered in this cartridge as a result of a contract with the Russian government and today the cartridge is still being used in a variety of rifles including the Dragunov, PKM, and a variety of sniper rifles. In fact, not only has the 7.62x54r remained popular and continued to see Russian military use but it’s become the military-issued cartridge with the longest service life in the entire world.
